We were exhausted when we woke up in the morning despite having a nice long sleep. We decided to have a relaxing day at home and spend time getting to know our Scottish relatives. Isobel cooked up her trademark meat breakfast for me consisting of Bacon, Sausage, Haggis and Black Pudding with an egg thrown on top for good measure. Yummy!
I turned on the television and was pleasantly surprised to find a double showing of the new series Doctor Who starting from the first episode. It was shaping up to be a great day. At the end of the first episode Jim and Alison came over to meet us. Alison is a new Doctor Who fan and has a love for the show that I remember having when I was young. May God help her parents! We had dressed Will up is his kilt prior to their arrival and they thought he looked fantastic in it. Will discovered a bag of Alison’s miniature dog toys and a pair of cash registers which he loved playing with and rolling in.
We watched the second episode of Doctor Who before getting down to settle an old score – a game of Monopoly from my last visit that we hadn’t finished. The game was fierce with lots of grimaces and intense concentration. Alison announced that she had a Nintendo Wii and it wasn’t long before we had it over and going. We spent most of the afternoon enjoying the range of games she had and running around outside.
We took Will out for a walk to find a playground and were not impressed to discover kids flicking the seats of the swings over the crossbar and broken glass over the ground. I cut my finger on a shard as I was putting Will in a swing and he fell out on to the ground landing on the side of his face. Fortunately the ground was soft and surprisingly he was more shocked than hurt. However as we were walking home he tripped up on his own feet and hit the concrete with the side of his head! He was more hurt than shocked this time and we gave him lots of kisses and hugs. Bless him, he shook it off and life returned to normal.
Isobel cooked a lovely steak pie from the local butcher which went down a treat. We quickly popped out to Tesco for some supplies and had a quick look around while we were at it. We came home and had some Apple Strudel for dessert before putting Will down to bed. There was a huge lineup of programs on TV so we sat down and let it all unfold – Emmerdale, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Rosemary and Thyme, Life on Mars and finally some more Doctor Who (funnily enough it was the werewolf episode set in Scotland!) while sharing a bottle of wine and scoffing twiglets… Brilliant!
