Chanaz, Annecy

In the morning we woke up and made our way downstairs to breakfast which consisted of croissants, local breads and cheeses. After a brief trip into to town to gets some supplies, we all came back to our room, had some lunch and a siesta. We had done a lot of traveling over the last week and we were now in a place where our minds could catch up with our bodies.

In the afternoon, we decided to head out to Chanaz, a cute little medieval town on the banks of a large canal that leads to Lac du Bourget. We took a stroll along the canal and headed up the narrow streets of the old town. We came back down at the other side of the town and walked back along the canal.

We decided to explore the shores of the lake where an old Abbey had been built. We followed the signs to Hautecombe Abbey but we arrived about 10 minutes too late to have a good look around. We thought we’d take a different way home so we found a road leading up into the hill on a James Bond type road that was steep, windy and narrow, but afforded us great views of the lake.

For dinner, we drove into the old town of Annecy. After looking around the many eateries, we found a cheese fondue restaurant where we ate far too much cheese and bread. The weather started to pack in as we were driving home and when we arrived at La Saliere, a huge thunderstorm had developed with lots of lightning and thunderclaps echoing around the valley. We had a glass of sherry and went to sleep.
