Lausanne, Rumilly

We had a good sleep which set us up well for the trip today. We had another morning coffee for breakfast, packed up our gear and headed out to the motorway. It was a beautiful day and there were lots of things to see for the road. We were still in the German part of Switzerland until we reached Bern. On the way in to Bern all the exits were called Ausfahrt, but on the way out they were called Sortie. It was quite interesting to see the change in language over such a short distance. We also found a funny sign which referred to a suburb in Bern called Wankdorf – wouldn’t want to live there!

We made great progress so we decided to stop in Lausanne for lunch. Gill had been to Lausanne before so she showed us the best place to go. We headed down to the Ouchy suburb near the lake where there were fantastic views and some great touristy shops. We had paninis for lunch and we finally managed to post our postcards that were bought in America, written in Austria and posted in Switzerland!

We headed on towards France where the drivers became noticeably more inconsiderate and cranky (not to us). We found our way in to Annecy to an Office de Tourisme where we picked up some maps and some good directions. Lou was happy with her French and felt more confident. The place we are staying in is about 10 minutes out of Annecy in a village called Sales on the way to a larger village called Rumelly. It is a very peaceful area and it felt a lot like Bannockburn.

Since we arrived early, we popped in to Rumelly to find a place to get a coffee and take a look around. There was a market selling paintings and knick-knacks, and a shop selling clothing very cheaply but for the fact that the largest size was a size 4!

We drove back to Sales and spent a good bit of time in the afternoon splashing around in the pool. After we put Will to bed, we sat out the back and drank some nice soft wine. Our hosts, Eric and Chrystelle Benoit, finished having their meal and I went over with some Swiss chocolates and some of our Austrian wine and offered them a taste. We ended up spending a good couple of hours chatting and sampling some of the local French wines.
